Working with Attachment and Emotion:
A brief overview of Emotionally Focused Therapy
EFT is an experiential model of couple therapy that directly addresses
disruptions in the strength and security of the attachment bond. Rooted
in Bowlby’s attachment theory, it strengthens this bond by accessing and
processing the underlying vulnerable emotions, often not expressed,
that frequently fuel couple conflict. In addition to the more common
patterns of couple conflict, EFT is well-suited to help couples resolve
affairs and heal in the aftermath of trauma. EFT is one of the few
empiracally-validated couple therapies.
This intro to EFT
for couples outlines the basic theory and interventions of the model,
with a special focus on assessment and alliance building as well as the
key events in the change process. Session video and discussion will be
used to help bring the key features of the model into focus.
